Montgomery County Woman Charged With Attempted First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Murder

A Montgomery Co. woman to face charges of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree murder.  The Kansas Attorney General’s Office filed charges against 31-year-old Megan Dawn McCutcheon. The charges stem from a drive-by shooting that killed 19-year-old Kimberly D. Meeks of Coffeyville near the intersection of Laurel and W. Main streets in Independence on Dec.14th, 2019.

The Montgomery County Chronicle reports that the premeditated attempted first–degree murder targeted Benjamin R. Whitaker in the drive-by. McCutcheon’s brother, Benjamin J. Mason was sentenced to life in prison for his direct involvement in the shooting of Meeks. In Mason’s hearings officers testified that Mason intended target was Whitaker who was walking with Meeks.

Although her brother Mason fired the gun that killed Meeks, McCutcheon was allegedly driving the vehicle. She did not fire a gun but, under Kansas law, she will be charged with premeditated first-degree murder and premeditated attempted first-degree murder by aiding and abetting Mason in that deadly shooting.
