Filamentous algae also known as pond moss can appear overnight in farm ponds. K-State Fisheries and Aquatics Specialist Joe Gerken says moss can be detrimental to fish and other aquatic life in that pond.
Gerken says it is important for pond owners to identify the specific cause of moss in order to attempt to prevent it. Gerken recommends allowing grass growth surrounding the pond to serve as a filter to reduce both nutrient and soil run-off into the pond.
