A Coffeyville woman was the victim of a fatal car accident in Independence. IPD identified 73-year-old Martha Hargis as the victim. At around 1:18pm in the afternoon on Friday, October 8, officers were dispatched to Park and Main for an injury accident involving an SUV and a hatchback car.

The passenger in the hatchback, Hargis, died the following day due to complications from injuries sustained in the crash. The investigation revealed that the SUV was traveling south on Park Boulevard, stopped for the stop sign, then failed to yield to the hatchback as it traveled east on Main. This is the first fatality accident in Independence for 2021.
