The Kansas Food Bank announced it has received a grant from the Fredonia Area Community Foundation to support its Food 4 Kids Weekend Backpack Program. The Food 4 Kids program provides kid-friendly, nutritious food packets for the weekend for children who experience chronic hunger.
During the 2020-21 school year, 66 children in Wilson County received the weekly food packets. The bank's school partners discreetly distribute these packets to children who need them each Friday.
Each child in the Food 4 Kids program tracked throughout the school year. Coordinators ensure that the child receives their packet each week, and their academic progress is also monitored. Representatives report that they consistently see improvements in the children they serve including better grades, fewer sick days and fewer behavioral issues.
