Soil testing is important for a number of reasons it can optimize crop production, improve nutritional balance and can save money. Livestock Production Agent Wendi Powell says it is important to know how to take a soil sample.

Powell says when you bring your soil samples into the extension office you'll want to make sure to let them know what kind of grass you are trying to grow.  Powell says the price for a soil test is $10 a sample, which can save you in the long run from spending $500 on the wrong kind of fertilizer.
