$1.3 Million KDOT Grant Awarded to Independence

 

City of Independence award 1.3 million dollars in Kansas Department of Transportation grant for road and street improvements. 1.3 million has been award through the KDOT city connecting link improvement program for Kansas fiscal year 2023 which runs from July 1st 2022-June 30th 2023. The funding applications for these projects were unsuccessfully submitted to the KDOT back in 2020. They were approved by the city commission for resubmission in the spring with a successful outcome.

 

One million of the grant will go towards widening U.S. Highway 75 Penn Avenue by two feet from Morningside Drive north of city limits and restore the pavement for a safer roadway. The KDOT grand will cover 90% of the project the city will cover the other 10%. The other $300,000 of the grand will be used for surface preservation and curb ramp replacement on U.S. Highway 75 Chestnut Street from Penn Avenue to 9th Street. This grant will fund a two-inch overlay and also replace the curb ramps with new asphalt. KDOT grant will cover 90% of this project and the city will match the other 10%
