Second Drowning at Elk City Lake

The body of a man was recovered Saturday evening at Elk City Lake.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, along with Independence EMS and Independence Rural Fire, responded to the Elk City Lake State Park swimming area Friday evening for a male subject who was reported to have gone under the water and never resurfaced.

Kansas Wildlife and Parks Game Warden Division were contacted and responded to the scene to assist in the search. The search continued through the late hours of the night. The next day, at about 5:30 pm, first responders located Thomas Crittenden of Independence.

This is the second drowning at Elk City Lake in recent months. Sheriff Ron Wade would like to remind boaters and swimmers to wear life vests when away from the swimming area.
