Avoiding Heat-Related Illnesses

As the temperatures and heat indices continue to climb, so does the risk for heat-related illnesses. Kansas State University climatologist Mary Knapp says the three signs of heat-related illness are often called The Heat Trilogy: heat cramps, heat stress, and heatstroke.

When planning outdoor activities - such as gardening, mowing the lawn, or playing sports - Knapp says to start hydrating the night before.

Knapp also says to avoid outdoor activities between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is at its highest angle and you’re most likely to get sunburned.
