The improvement of and access to good technology has caused the printing of counterfeit money to become more common. The City of Independence had 54 counterfeit cases in 2020 and has 21 so far in 2021. Police Chief Jerry Harrison says it's best to be proactive and make sure the business is trained to spot fake money.

Chief Harrison says if you are handed counterfeit money try to keep the bill and get as much information about the person as possible.  Chief Harrison says if you can safely stall the person and keep them at the store while the police are called and have time to arrive.
