K-7 Replacement Needed in Girard

A major overhaul will take place on Highway K-7 through Girard.

The city announced on a Facebook post that the damage caused to the highway was a result of frost heave due to Winter Storm Uri. City officials contacted the Kansas Department of Transportation to inquire about natural disaster funding as the damage cannot be repaired by a simple overlay. The entire base will need to be excavated and replaced at an estimated cost of $450,000.

KDOT sent geologists to investigate the damage and determined the City would be eligible for funding which will cover 100% of the cost. KDOT and Girard have worked together to address traffic issues and engineer a comprehensive fix.

KDOT has indicated that they anticipate a June/July start date for the repairs.
