National Police Week Starts Sunday

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy declared May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls National Police Week. This is the week that law enforcement honors officers who died protecting the safety of others.

In 2020 there were 135 officers killed in the line of duty. Nationwide, 64 men and women have died in the line of duty so far this year, about a 39 percent increase in line of duty deaths in the first 74 days of 2021 compared to the same time in 2020.

Throughout the pandemic, IPD has sought a balance between public safety and civil rights. IPD is grateful that Independence continues to show its support by providing food, treats, and encouraging words. Chief Jerry Harrison said on behalf of all the officers and dispatchers in the department he would like to sincerely thank the community for showing them your support.
