Low-Income Residents in Independence Getting Financial Assistance

Low-income residents in the city of Indpendence will be getting some financial assitance.

The city approved an adjustment to the criteria for assisting low-income residents with their water, sewer and trash service rates at its most recent city commission meeting. Those who qualify must be under the "extremely low-income limits" based on United States Department of Housing and Urban Development criteria.

Other criteria include that you must be living in the city limits, you must be a resident for at least 12 months, the water/sewer account must be listed in the name of the hardship subscriber and the hardship subscriber must be recertified on January 1st each year.

The previous criteria for income was $11,000 regardless of how many people live in the household.

The updated hardship rate application is available for download on the City website. For more information, you can contact the city of Independence at (620) 332-2500.
