As temperatures rise, so do burglaries of homes and cars. But there are things you can do to help yourself from becoming the victim of a crime. Independence Police Chief Jerry Harrison says there are a few simple things you can do to deter a would-be burglar.

Another thing you can do to help deter burglars is to not advertise your belongings.

Harrison also says don't make your car an attractive target by leaving things in plain sight.
