Montgomery County Not Eating Enough Fruits and Veggies

Recent data shows Montgomery County residents aren't consuming enough fruits and veggies.

At least two-and-a-half cups of fruit and vegetable intake daily is associated with a reduced risk of many chronic diseases, including heart attack, stroke and certain types of cancer. Most fruits and vegetables, when prepared without added fats or sugars, are also relatively low in calories and can help individuals achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Despite the benefits, many people still do not eat recommended levels of fruits and vegetables.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 49.3% of adults in Montgomery County reported consuming fruit less than one time per day.

This is higher than both the state and national average. 43.7% of Kansans and 40.1% of Americans reported consuming fruit less than one time per day.

There were 42 county values reported in KDHE's study with 57.2% being the highest in Jackson County which is approximately 75 miles northwest of Kansas City. Cherokee had the third-highest rate at 54.5% and Labette was fourth with 52.2% of adults reported consuming fruit less than one time per day.
