Due to staffing concerns related to COVID-19 quarantines, the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence will operate under a modified schedule starting next week. The zoo will be closed next Sunday and Monday, and open from noon to 5 pm from Tuesday to Saturday. The zoo will once again close for the Sunday and Monday after that, before returning to normal hours on Tuesday, December 15th.

City manager Kelly Passauer explained that the zoo is operating at about half staff due to quarantines caused by COVID-19. To maintain open hours, while still maintaining adequate staffing for animals, the zoo will operate under the new schedule for one week.

Passauer said the zoo appreciates the public's understanding as they continue to make adjustments.
