Independence voted in favor of renewing the Penny for Progress during the November 3rd election which taxes all sales a penny on the dollar.

 

The money from the tax will be used for projects such as extensive improvements at Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo, major street improvements and more.

 

The continuation of the tax will not increase the sales tax rate of 9.5%. It will also avoid the increase of property tax to cover the city’s obligations for mill levy support and financing of debt related to past and future community improvement projects.

 

The Penny for Progress tax was set to expire on October 2022 and has been in place since October 2012.
