A man was arrested over the weekend in Chanute on a pair of criminal charges.

Chanute PD responded to the area of the 700 block of North Santa Fe for a report of a man that was causing issues with some of the other passengers on a bus. Due to the way the individual was acting, the bus wouldn’t let him back on. Officers told the man that he could stay in the lobby of the police department and wait for someone to pick him up.

The man eventually left the police department and a few hours later officers received a call about an individual going down the chimney of a building. Officers went to the outside of the building and could hear an individual yelling for help from inside the chimney. Fire and EMS crews were called in to assist with getting the man out of the chimney. Once out, officers arrested 33-year-old Brent C. Avalos for criminal trespassing and felony criminal damage.

He was taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.
