Controlling Sericea Lespedeza in Pastures

Sericea lespedeza can be one of the biggest struggles for many pastures in Kansas. This noxious weed can overrun native grasses, and its seed remains viable in the soil for years or even decades. K-State Pasture Management Specialist Walt Fick says now is the time for herbicide applications to sericea, but the first thing is to positively identify sericea lespedeza before spraying.

There are a handful of herbicide products labeled for summertime treatment of sericea. All have been evaluated in independent K-State field trials. Fick says there are two primary options.  You can refer to the K-State Chemical Weed Control Guide for further information on chemical control of sericea lespedeza.
