A Joplin man died and another was hurt after a crash Friday near Baxter Springs.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 41-year old Gage Phelps was driving east on Highway 166, about two miles east of Highway 400. For an unknown reason, his SUV crossed the center line and hit an ongoing semi-truck head-on.

The highway was closed for nearly 11 hours between Baxter Springs and the K-26 Junction.

Phelps died in the crash while the driver of the semi-truck 40-year-old, Jeremy Johnston of Winfield, Mo., suffered serious injuries and was taken to Freeman Hospital in Joplin.
