Montgomery County Commission Meeting for December 16th

The Montgomery County Commissioners met on Monday with plenty of items on the agenda that included an Executive Session, Public Works, Emergency Management and Tourism.

The meeting began with County Clerk Charlotte Scott Schmidt calling an Executive Session for the job status for non elected personnel. The Executive Session took around 15 minutes with no action taken by the Commission.

After the Executive Session, Public Works Coordinator Jim Wright along with Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Phelps provided an update to the Commissioners. Wright first discusses the petition for the road vacation in Caney as they wanted to forgo that as they wanted to adopt a new petition with some revisions to it (AUDIO). The Commission discussed and made sure that everyone was on the same page regarding the petition, whether it was being revised or completely renewed (AUDIO). After discussion the Commissioners approved for the new petition.

Maintanence Supervisor Jeff Phelps provided an update to the Commisioners regarding a project coming up involving an estimate for redoing the electric plumbing throughout the courthouse. There would be a chance that the Courthouse would have to be shutdown in order to get this project done but hopefully it wouldn't be no more than two days max, according to Phelps. Another issue that he brought up was the heater that is down at the hazardous waste and that was something they were looking to replace (AUDIO)

Montgomery County Emergency Management Manager Rick Whitson and Lee Miller provided updates on upcoming equipment purchases including new lanterns for the surrounding fire stations among other purchases.

Independence Chamber of Commerce Director Lisa Wilson and Tourism Coordinator Michelle McCormick provided a tourism update to the Commissioners regarding Conferences and Meetings that took place in 2019 and what is ahead for tourism in 2020. They also discussed the Bronze Statue Tours and talked about finding better ways to promote upcoming events and activities in the Independence area.

The agenda is always subject to change and all meetings are open to the public.
