Independence police are being joined by the KBI in gathering information in what police calls a fatal drive by shooting on West Laurel Street on Saturday night. 

One person is dead in the shooting which occured near the former Sonic Drive-In. The identity of the victim cannot be released until the next of kin are identified, according to Police Chief Jerry Harrison. 

Two persons of interest are being sought in the shooting, and a vehicle belonging to one of the suspects has been impounded. The names of the suspects will not be released because of the early nature of the investigation, according to Harrison. 

The KBI Special Crimes Unit was deployed to Independence to assist local police with the investigation. The area where the shooting took place was cut off to the public. Harrison emphasized that the investigation was still early and they were trying to understand if there was any relationship or connection between the suspects and the victim.
