A wildfire in southeast Kansas initiated mandatory evacuations for residents south and east of Longton Tuesday night.

 

The wildfire was burning near the Elk and Chautauqua County line. All available fireman crews from Chautauqua County, Montgomery County, Labette County,, Greenwood County, and Wilson County, and several townships responded. Elk County EMS and Elk County Emergency Management also responded to assist where they could.

 

The grass fire was brought under control around 3 a.m. this morning and the firefighters will be on scene for some time watching for hot spots.
