Counties Funded for Roadway Projects

Sixteen counties throughout Kansas are to receive a combined total of about $4.5 million to improve safety on rural roads across the state as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) program. Counties submitted applications for the program from November 2018 to the end of January, and county projects were selected in early February for year 2021. Projects are either “systemic” or “site specific”. Systemic projects get 100 percent funded, while site specific are 90 percent federally funded with the county contributing 10 percent to the project cost.

Montgomery County is one of the 16 counties selected, and it will be site-specific, awarded $463,000 to construct a continuous two-way center left lane on CR 3900 south of Independence. Chautauqua County is a systemic project awarded $441,000 to upgrade signing of all major collectors west of K-99. Cowley County is also systemic, awarded $356,000 to upgrade signing of all gravel major collectors. For more information, contact Michael Stringer at 785-296-3861 or michael.stringer@ks.gov.
