K-State Research and Extension Advises 9th Street Fresh Community Garden

Jacob Weber from K-State Research and Extension (Wildcat District) office has advice for Coffeyville's 9th Street Fresh community garden initiative that is now being kicked off for planting by St. Patrick's Day. The new community garden initiative is called 9th Street Fresh. It kicked off in early February, just days after Coffeyville's Reawakening became official at the Coffeyville City Commission meeting in late January. Ron Olson and Peggy Steele are providing one of their vacant lots for Coffeyville residents to plant food. The first 20 residents to sign up get a free plot of land. Also, there will be guidelines for residents to purchase their own organic seed, fertilizer, and pesticide.

Jacob Weber from K-State Research and Extension Wildcat District advises 9th Street Fresh to look info fertility management and soil testing before tilling and planting starts. Weber also has recommendation for growing the food organically without harmful pesticides and fertilizers. The project manager is Terry Vernon who said his gardening background includes only organic.

Update! They have a total of 24 plots, and 16 plots are still available. 9th Street Fresh is also looking for business sponsors who would be recognized at the entrance of the community garden where a sitting area will be with a bench and a rose garden. To sponsor, volunteer, or reserve your free garden plot, call Terry at 918-330-0413. The K-State Research and Extension, Independence office, can be reached at 620-331-2690.
