Kansas turns 158-years-old today. January 29th marks the date in 1861 when Kansas joined the union as a free state. It was, at times, a bloody start to statehood. Kansans persevered. The state motto: ad astra per aspera translated from Latin means to the stars through difficulties. Today, Kansas will be recognized with a number of activities at the Kansas Museum of History.
The museum, located in Topeka, will be have a slate of special events until 3 pm. There is no charge for admission.
