Many of us will be enjoying a long weekend in the remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Independence Chamber of commerce's Kathy Shepard explains they are hosting a celebration in the name Dr. King coming up on Sunday starting with a free soup luncheon. A free program for everyone starting at 2PM with a free soup luncheon, a program will follow at 3PM featuring music, games, and speakers honoring Dr. King, as well as crowning the winner of the Food Fight which was a community food drive between the students and citizens of Independence. Shepard says they will also award a citizen with the Spirit of Unity award. For an individual who is committed to service around the community. Shepard says the event is free of charge and encourages everyone to come check out the speakers, presentations and music that will be in the program. Taking place in the Independence High School Performing Arts Center with the lunch at 2 and the event right after at 3PM.
