Numerous area athletes put on a show at the 2025 Kansas Track and Field State Championships this weekend.
Sophomore Laney Hillmon of Chanute placed 8th in the 400m dash, and 6th in the 4x800m relay. The Chanute boys placed 3rd in the state as a team.
Junior Peyton Hare of Eureka is the state runner-up in the 2A 400m dash, breaking a school record in the event. Additionally, the Lady Tornadoes 4x100m relay team of Kimber Ptacek, Brooklyn Ogden, Maela Neill, and Olivia Valentine placed 5th in the state.
The Caney Valley boys 4x400 relay team of Ben Matthews, Drake Roberds, Reuben Sanchez, and Cash Brown placed 7th with a time of 3:28. Matthews also finished 5th in the state in the long jump, with a leap of 20 feet, 8 inches, while junior Simeon Sanchez broke a school record with a 6th place finish in the 1600m, with a time of 4:22.
Labette County's Jamaal Jackson set a new state meet record in the 100m dash, with a time of 10.65, winning his first state title. Jackson also placed 2nd in the 400m dash, while Keegan Stritzke place 2nd in shot put, and 3rd in discus.
Parsons freshman Ayanna Robertson finished 2nd in the triple jump, with a leap of 35 feet, 11 inches. Robertson was both league and regional champion in the event.
