Lady Raven Forward Commits to La Salle

A key piece of last season's Lady Raven team is on her way to Division 1.

Forward Ivy Fox announced her commitment to La Salle earlier this week, a program in Philadelphia that plays in the Atlantic 10 conference. She says being a D1 athlete hasn't quite set in yet.

Fox was receiving calls and interest from a number of schools over the past several weeks. She says the conversations with La Salle stood out.

Fox is from a small town in North Dakota. She says she's always had extra motivation that drives her.

Fox will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Fisher Introduced as Hutchinson Head Coach

Hutchinson Blue Dragon basketball has officially introduced their next head coach, with former Butler head coach and Coffeyville assistant coach Kyle Fisher the new man in charge.

Butler and Hutchinson are heated conference rivals, competing for both region and national championships. Fisher says it's not his first experience on each side of a rivalry.

Fisher will get a late start in the recruiting cycle due to the uncharacteristic late hiring. He says he's not concerned about finding talented players for a competitive team.

Fisher spent seven seasons at Coffeyville as an assistant under Jay Herkelman. Both Fisher and the Blue Dragons, and Herkelman and the Red Ravens are projected to be at the top of the KJCCC in 2024-25.

Hutchinson Names Fisher Head Coach

The Hutchinson Blue Dragons have their next men's basketball coach.

The Blue Dragons have announced Kyle Fisher as the 16th head coach in the history of Hutchinson basketball. He will be officially introduced at a news conference on Wednesday.

Fisher is seasoned in the Jayhawk conference, spending time as an assistant coach at Coffeyville, before being named the head coach of the Butler Grizzlies, where he's been for five seasons.

Red Raven coach Jay Herkelman says he's excited for Coach Fisher.

Over his five seasons at Butler, Fisher's teams posted a 113-42 overall record. With the exception of the COVID season, Butler won at least 23 games each season under Coach Fisher.

Herkelman says Fisher shows strong traits of an effective head coach.

In seven seasons on the CCC staff, the Ravens won 179 games, with four trips to the national tournament, including a national semifinal finish in the 2018-19 season.

The Blue Dragons finished 29-7 last season, and are replacing Tommy DeSalme, who took the head coach position at Bartlesville High School last month.

Wildcats Land Talented Transfer Guard

Jerome Tang and the Wildcats add another player in the transfer portal, landing guard Max Jones from Cal State-Fullerton.

Following the offseason losses of guards Dai Dai Ames, RJ Jones, and Arthur Kaluma, the Wildcats were in desperate need of a guard that can score.

Jones chose KSU over Louisville and Texas Tech, and brings both experience and talent.

The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 15 points per game for the Titans last season, shooting nearly 40% from beyond the arc. Prior to CSU-Fullerton, Jones spent two seasons at Division 2 Tampa where he was named Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year.

Jones is the fifth player added from the portal, joining Baye Fall, Dug McDaniel, CJ Jones, and Brendan Hausen. The Wildcats still have four open scholarship spots for next year's team.

IHS Tennis Finishes 2nd in State

The Independence Bulldog tennis team finished off a remarkable season with a state runner-up finish.

The Bulldogs were the only team in 4A to have all six boys still playing on the second day of the tournament.

The doubles team of Camdon Julian and Aiden Denney are state champions, with the doubles team of Tucker Gregory and Matthew McLenon placing fifth. For Julian, it is his third consecutive doubles championship, with three different partners.

Keith Sanders came ninth place in singles, while Carson Merrick placed 12th.

Missouri State to Move to Division 1

Missouri State is moving to Divsion 1 full-time, including for college football.

The school announced they will become the 12th full member of Conference USA when they join in 2025. Missouri State joins Delaware and Kennesaw State as FCS programs to make the jump to CUSA.

Athletic Director Kyle Moats says this is an opportunity that makes sense for the school.

The Bears have been a long member of the Missouri Valley, competing in FCS since 1981. They appeared in four NCAA playoffs, including in 2020 and 2021 under coach Bobby Petrino.

Moats says they aren't worried about losing money switching to a new conference.

CUSA lost six members to the American Athletic Conference and have rebuilt by adding former independent schools Liberty and New Mexico State, as well as former FCS programs Sam Houston State and Jacksonville State.

Lugo Continues to Impress as Royal

The Kansas City Royals win another series, with Seth Lugo dominating on the mound.

Lugo was sensational, throwing eight innings, only allowing one run, with a career high 12 strikeouts in a 4-2 win over the Angels on Sunday.

Lugo has been dominant thus far as a Royal, with a 6-1 record, and a Major League best 1.66 earned run average.

Manager Matt Quatraro says the team is always confident when Lugo is on the mound.

Kansas City remains on the West Coast, playing a series with the Seattle Mariners before returning to KC this weekend.

Former Raven Transfers to Florida State

A member of the 2021 Red Raven national championship team is finishing his college basketball career in the ACC.

Bostyn Holt will use his final year of college eligibilty in Tallahassee, suiting up for the Seminoles. Red Raven coach Jay Herkelman says Holt was always a fan favorite.

Holt brings great size to the backcourt, standing nearly 6-foot-7 and having great athleticism. Herkelman says Holt's skill set will fit perfectly with what Florida State does.

Holt transfered to Utah after CCC, and spent last season at South Dakota as one of numerous Ravens to end up at Division 1. Herkelman says it's a rewarding feeling to watch his players move on.

Holt averaged nearly 13 points per game last season, starting every game at South Dakota. He will play primarily point guard for Florida State.

Worthy Impresses Early at Chiefs Camp

It has been an impressive start to the career of the Chiefs first round pick.

Wide receiver Xavier Worthy has showcased both speed and technique early in Chiefs mini camp, catching the eyes of many around the league.

General Manager Brett Veach says Worthy is much more than his speed.

With the injury history of Marquise Brown, the inconsistency of Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney, and the impending suspension for Rashee Rice, Worthy will have a big role early. Veach says his intelligence has impressed the organization.

Worthy broke the combine record with a 4.21 second 40-yard dash, and had over 1,000 yards receiving last season at Texas.

Herkelman Speaks on Jahni Summers Committment

Jahni Summers has wrapped up his final week as a Red Raven, and is officially an Indiana State Sycamore.

Summers signed his letter of intent earlier this week, making his move to Division 1 official following his KJCCC Freshman of the Year campaign.

Red Raven coach Jay Herkelman says Summers had a chip on his shoulder early on.

Summers averaged 18 points per game this season, leading the Ravens in scoring, as well as being the only freshman on an all-conference team. Herkelman says his success directly correlates to his hard work.

Indiana State won 32 games last season, making it all the way to the NIT championship game. Herkelman says it's a great opportunity for Summers to continue his journey.

Summers becomes the latest Raven to transfer to Indiana State from Coffeyville, joining Dawon Cummings, Wilfred Antoine, and Tony Twitty.

Leiker Reflects on Career at CCC

An era of leading athletes, both on the football field and at Coffeyville Community College, is coming to a close for Jeff Leiker.

Leiker is retiring from his position as AD at the end of the school year, after stepping down as head football coach late last year. He says he's ready for a new chapter, spending more time with his family.

Leiker has been at the helm of Raven athletics since 2007, and has overseen one of the great runs in Red Raven history, with three national championships, and countless All-American and Olympic level athletes.

Leiker says he was put in a position to succeed with outstanding support.

Leiker will be succeeded by Bryce Saia as Athletic Director. Defensive coordinator Nick Dobler was named the new head coach of CCC football last year.

FULL INTERVIEW w/Jeff Leiker

CPL Expels Wichita Independent

Wichita Independent has been expelled from the Central Plains League for a full school year, in a unanimous decision by the conference.

CPL President Greg Rosenhagen, who is also the principal of Cheney, revealed that a motion was made and passed during a meeting in late April.

Rosenhagen adds that "the concerns are mostly about ethics and the lack of cooperation regarding league expectations," and that the committee believes Wichita Independent has failed to meet expected standards of the conference.

Independent is a private school in Wichita, and has been a member of the CPL since 2004. The decision did not involve KSHSAA, but is considered final.

Raven Softball Building Foundation

The Red Raven softball program has positive momentum to end the 2024 season, and look to the future with excitement.

The Ravens were much improved on the diamond this season, winning seven conference games after winning just eight games all of last season.

Head coach Meredith Smith says the team's non-conference scheduled help set the tone.

The energy around the team has been steadily improving as the season has gone on. Smith says the team's attitude is a great sign moving forward.

Smith is departing the program after two seasons, taking a position back in her home state of Tennessee. She says despite the change in head coach, she believes the Ravens are on their way to competing for championships.

CCC will begin searching for a new head softball coach moving forward.

Rice Under Investigation for Assault

An offseason to forget has potentially more trouble for Rashee Rice.

The Chiefs wide receiver is a suspect in an alleged assault that injured a man at a downtown Dallas nightclub earlier this week. The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including swelling on one side of his face, according to law enforcement.

The Chiefs declined comment, as did Rice's attorney. This news comes a month after Rice was involved in a six-car crash that injured seven people, as the result of street racing, and also fled the scene.

Pro Football Focus's Mike Florio says Rice needs a wake up call.

Rice is facing eight felony charges for the accident in late March, and is facing a lengthy NFL suspension.

Leiker Honored on Conner Taylor Weekend

The Red Raven baseball team ended the regular season with a series win over Labette County, but the weekend was special for a different reason.

Conner Taylor Memorial weekend has become an annual tradition for CCC baseball, honoring and remembering the life of Conner Taylor, who was a part of the 2016 team before tragically taking his own life.

Each year, a member of the Raven baseball team is awarded the Conner Taylor Memorial Award. The award highlights an individual who shows respect, compassion, and love for baseball and for people.

Sophomore pitcher Ryan Leiker was named the 2024 Conner Taylor Memorial Award recepient. Freshman pitcher Garrison Martin says Leiker is a great ambassador for CCC baseball.

The Ravens are postseason bound, and take on the Dodge City Conquistadors in a best-of-three series, which begins tomorrow.

Red Raven Track & Field Impress at Region VI Championships

Red Raven Track & Field competed at the Region VI/KJCCC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Pratt Community College.

The Raven men finished fourth in the region, and were named champions of the KJCCC East. The Lady Ravens placed 10th in the region, and third in the conference.

There were five region championships among CCC athletes, with the women's 4x100m relay of Jalia Bunn, Linya Gedeon, Royanah Farmer, and Jaiden Leighton, as well as Jonathan Crawford in the 200m and 400m, Elijah Rowe in long jump, and Trevor Gunzell in the shot put.

Deyunsha Westbrook in the 400m hurdles, Ana Maousaridis in hammer throw, Reginald Wilson in hammer throw, Jaylon Burke in triple jump, and Gunzell in discuss were all conference champions as well.

Summers Commits to Indiana State University

The top freshman in the Jayhawk Conference has made his Division 1 decision.

Coffeyville guard Jahni Summers has committed to Indiana State University, joining a team that won 32 games last season and went to the NIT championship game.

Summers joins former assistant coach Jake Odum, who took a coaching position under new Sycamores coach Matthew Graves. Summers says he plans to work with Odum for a smooth transition.

Summers was one of the hardest workers in all of JUCO, and was the only freshman named to a KJCCC all-conference team. He says his motivation stems from proving people wrong.

Jahni will move to Terra Haute next month for summer workouts. He says he has fond memories and experiences from his time in Coffeyville.

Summers will have an opportunity to earn immediate playing time at ISU, and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Legendary Raven Football Coach Passes Away

Red Raven football lost an icon today, with the passing of Richard "Skip" Foster.

Foster was one of the most accomplished Ravens in program history, as both a player and coach. He started every game for CCC on the offensive line in 1979 and 1980, being named an All-American in his sophomore season.

Skip joined the Raven coaching staff in 1985, before being promoted to head coach in 1989. He would thrive as coach, winning 83 games, including the 1990 NJCAA National Championship.

Foster and the Ravens went to six conference championships in 12 years, and produced 58 first-team all-conference players, which was the most of any team.

Foster left Coffeyville to pursue coaching in the Arena Football League, where he had stints with the Tulsa Talons, Austin Wranglers, Arizona Rattlers, and San Jose Sharks.

Skip Foster is survived by his wife, Gay, two sons, Spencer and Gage, and daughter, Shelby.

Wildcats Land Transfer Center from Arkansas

Jerome Tang has secured his first major forward recruit for next season.

Center Baye Fall committed to Kansas State over the weekend, after spending his freshman season at Arkansas. Fall is 6-foot-11 and played in nine games for the Razorbacks las season. He has three years of eligibilty remaining.

Fall arrives to Manhattan with plenty of hype surrounding him. He is a former McDonald's All-American, and was ranked as highly as the sixth-best high school player in the country in the class of 2023.

He is from Dakar, Senegal, and is the fourth transfer commit for Jerome Tang this offseason. He is projected to come off the bench for the Wildcats, with David N'Guessan and Taj Manning returning, and Arthur Kaluma's status still unknown.

Ames Leaving Kansas State After One Season

Kansas State is losing a talented guard to the transfer portal after one season.

Dai Dai Ames has announced his intent to enter the portal, with a "do not contact" distinction, which generally means the target destination is already known.

Ames played in 31 games as a freshman, also making 16 starts. He had a career-high 16 points in the NIT loss to Iowa, and was projected to be a starter on next year's team.

Ames is the sixth Wildcat to enter the portal in the 2024 offseason. Dug McDaniel, CJ Jones, Brendan Hausen, and Bartlesville recruit David Castillo are the four guards currently on the roster.

Kelce, Chiefs Agree to Two Year Deal

One of the staples of the Chiefs run of success is staying in town on a new contract.

Tight end Travis Kelce has agreed to a new two year deal to stay in Kansas City through 2025. He says he's thankful to stay home, and excited to get to work.

Kelce's new contract has a fully guaranteed $17 million salary for 2024, with an additional 17.25 million in 2025. The deal makes Kelce the highest paid tight end in the NFL.

Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach says Kelce is a unique player the organization couldn't lose.

Kelce is under contract through his age 36 season, increasing the chances he stays in Kansas City his entire career.

Hunter Dickinson to Return to KU

The Kansas Jayhawks will be getting their top player back.

Center Hunter Dickinson announced he is returning to Kansas for his final year of college basketball.

Dickinson has been one of the top players in the nation his entire career, able to score from inside and outside the paint, as well as being a premiere shot blocker and rebounder. He averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game in his first season in Lawrence.

Dickinson joins guard Dajuan Harris and K.J. Adams as returners for next year's team. The Jayhawks also have a pair of top-50 recruits in Flory Bidunga and Rakease Passmore, as well as four transfers in Rylan Griffen from Alabama, Zeke Mayo from South Dakota State, Riley Kugel from Florida, and AJ Storr from Wisconsin.

Leiker to Retire as AD, Saia to Assume Role

There will soon be a new leader of the Coffeyville Community College athletic department.

Jeff Leiker informed CCC trustees of his intention to retire at the end of the school year, which was accepted by the trustees. Leiker has served as the Athletic Director since November of 2007.

Leiker will be succeeded by Bryce Saia, who was hired after last school year as Director of Special Projects and Athletic Fundraising, and has also coached with Leiker on the football staff two decades ago.

The Red Ravens have achieved great success in Leiker's regime, winning national championships in volleyball and men's basketball, as well as having many athletes competing at the national and Olympic levels.

Leiker will continue to serve as AD until the end of the 2023-24 school year.

Chiefs Go Wide Receiver on Record Setting Night

A record-setting Round 1 of the NFL Draft is in the books.

Six quarterbacks were taken in the first 12 picks, with Caleb Williams No. 1 to Chicago, Jayden Daniels No. 2 to Washington, Drake Maye No. 3 to New England, Michael Penix Jr No. 8 to Atlanta, JJ McCarthy No. 10 to Minnesota, and Bo Nix No. 12 to Denver.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to make their selection, picking wide receiver Xavier Worthy from the University of Texas.

Worthy has incredible speed, setting the NFL combine record for fastest 40-yard dash. NFL Network's Bucky Brooks says Worthy can open up the Kansas City offense.
