Peggy Jean Etta Brown

Peggy Jean Etta Brown age 94, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Parsons, Kansas.

Peggy birthday was December 23, 1929, and was born in Ramona, Oklahoma to Jess and Pearl (Symonds) Hodge.  A birthday just days before Christmas often became a combined celebration, especially when she was a young child.  Her parents divorced and she was raised by her by her grandmother while her mother worked. She was very close to her grandmother and mother. Peggy lived in Coffeyville while she was young and met Montie in grade school.  Both she and Montie moved away and later returned to Coffeyville as teens in high school.  It was as a teen that Peggy met her high school sweetheart Montie, and the two were married on April 29, 1948. The couple had two children, Johnny, and Joyce. Montie preceded Peggy in death on April 10, 1988.

As a young woman Peggy worked at Continental Can during World War II building assembling bomb bay doors for the B52 Stratofortress.  She and Montie moved to several places across the US for employment opportunities.  Peggy became a CNA and worked in long term care for 12 years. She and Montie made Hutchinson, Kansas their home where they raised their family for over 45 years.  It was after Montie’s passing that she moved back to Coffeyville to be near her daughter, Joyce Bess and her husband to be closer to her family.

Peggy enjoyed flower gardening, watching the evening news, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and westerns.  She was a good cook and enjoyed looking for new recipes, always with the intent of trying them.

Peggy was a loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, and friend.  Peggy is survived by daughter who became her best friend as Joyce transitioned to adulthood, her son Johnny Ray Brown and his wife Karen, grandchildren Kari Layman, Kelli MacKinzie, John Ben Brown, Melinda Brown, Missy Brown and several great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 2 pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville, Kansas with Joe Brooks officiating. Peggy will be laid to rest next to her husband following the services in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.  To leave a message of condolence, share a memory or view services visit her obituary page at www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com
