Barbara Ann McCord

Barbara Ann McCord, 84, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

 

She was born on February 10, 1939, in Coffeyville to Rayfield H. and Ella P. (Smith) Benning.  Barbara grew up on the family farm in east of Coffeyville in Labette County where she attended Snow Hill School, she attended and graduated from Labette County Community HIgh School in Altamont, Kansas.  She continued her education at Kansas State College in Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) receiving a bachelor's degree

 and master's degree in education.  

 

Barbara's career as a 3rd-grade teacher at Edna Grade School was more than a job; it was a calling. Her passion for her students and their success was a cornerstone of her life. She approached her work with a dedication that was unrivaled, pouring her heart and soul into nurturing the minds and characters of the next generation. Barbara's impact extends far beyond the classroom walls, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues. Upon her retirement, Barbara remained in Edna, Kansas, where she continued to be a cherished member of the community.

 

She was a lifelong member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville, and longtime member of Holy Name Altar Society.  Barara enjoyed being a member of Futurama Investment Club, Edna Bears and Edna Echo groups. Barbara volunteered her time as a cook at the Edna Senior Center and sold many pies at various fund raising events in Edna.

 

Barbara is survived by her loving family, including her stepdaughter Debra Jo (Vince) Mangels, stepson Kent (Cindy) McCord, granddaughters Dana Means, Raina Mangels, Alyssa McCord, great-granddaughter Dani Means, and grandson River Means, her sisters Beth Stevenson, Jo Briggs, Jeanne (Jerry) Klein, her nieces Susan (Joe) Newman, Kim Baker, Ramona (Michael) Hagerty, and her nephews Leon (Cami) Hills, Norman (Deana) Hills. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rayfield and Ella Benning, her beloved husband, Wilbur H. "Jim" McCord, and stepson, Dale McCord.

 

Visitation will be held at David W. Barnes Funeral Home on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m..

 

The Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Holy Name Catholic Church, with Father James Schibi officiating.  Burial will follow in North Edna Cemetery in Edna, Kansas.

 

The family suggests memorials to the Edna Community Scholarship Fund; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
