Elsie "Joan" (Post) Shearhart

Elsie “Joan” (Post) Shearhart passed away June 15, 2023, at the age of 90.  She passed peacefully at her home at Gran Villas on Tyler in Coffeyville, Kansas, with family at bedside.

 

Joan was born July 19, 1932, in Winfield, Kansas, to Claud Bryan and Elsie Golda (Rowlands) Post.  She grew up in the Edna and Altamont areas.  She attended schools in Altamont, graduating from Altamont High School in 1948.  She also attended Coffeyville Junior College.  

 

Joan married James Robert (Jim) Masters in 1952.  Three children were born to this marriage:  Elizabeth Lynn, Judith Ann, and Carl Bryan.  They were later divorced.  

 

Joan then married Jay Everett Shearhart on September 25, 1968.  Jay brought two sons into the marriage, John Everett and Charles Edward Shearhart.  Jay and Joan enjoyed 50 years of marriage prior to his death in 2019.  

 

Joan worked as a secretary in various companies before leaving work to raise her new combined family.  She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Coffeyville, where she served on the Altar Guild for 55 years.  She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and being with her family.

 

Surviving to cherish her memory are two daughters, Lynn Bumgarner of Coffeyville, Kansas, Judy (Phil) Neely of Coffeyville, Kansas, and one son Bryan (Juli) Masters of Wichita, Kansas.  She is also survived by ten grandchildren (Jennifer, Michael, Rebecca, Jessica, Benjamin, Katelyn, Marshall, Mariah, Johnny, and Mary) and 14 great-grandchildren.  

 

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, her parents, two step-sons and their wives, John (Janet) Shearhart and Charles (Jami) Shearhart, daughter-in-law Cheryl Capps, son-in-law David Bumgarner, and sister and brother-in-law Betty and Leonard Nettleton.  

 

David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Coffeyville is in charge of services for Joan.  Services are planned for Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 10:00 am at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Coffeyville. 

 

The family will be available to greet friends and family from 5:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 20, at St. Paul’s.  

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Joan’s honor may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Altar Guild or to Coffeyville Community College Foundation’s Dr. David Bumgarner Scholarship Fund.  Memorials may be left with the funeral home.
