Hugh J. Kimmons

Hugh J. Kimmons, age 88, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at Overland Park Medical Center in Lenexa, Kansas. 

Hugh was born on April 20, 1933, in Chetopa, Kansas to Hugh and Leola (Collins) Kimmons.  He grew up in Chetopa where he attended local schools.  Hugh proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Chetopa. 

He met and fell in love with Dorothy Gossett, the two were married on April 29, 1956, in Chetopa.  After a year they moved to Coffeyville, Kansas where they made their home.  They had three children, Michael, Saundra and Janet.  They were long time members of Holy Name Catholic Church.  Dorothy preceded him in death on March 7, 2005. 

In 1956 he attended the American School of Auctioneering.  Hugh worked as a delivery driver for Thompson Brothers in Coffeyville for over 30 years.  For several years he also ran a small engine repair shop.  He served on the Rural Water District 11 Board for several years and the Coffeyville Senior Citizens Activity Center Board for 17 years.

Hugh enjoyed camping with the Coffee Kan's Group, playing pitch, traveling, talking and telling stories, watching his grandchildren play baseball and softball. 

In 2006 he was married to Betty Jean VanWinkle.  They made their home in Coffeyville.  They couple spent ten wonderful years together until Betty Jean passed away on November 14, 2016. 

Those surviving to cherish Hugh's memory are his daughters, Saundra Ferguson and husband, Ken, Janet Reynolds and husband, Mark all of Coffeyville, Kansas, daughter-in-law, Brenda Kimmons of Chickapea, Kansas, grandchildren, Jesse Kimmons and wife, Raci, Chad Kimmons, Clint Ferguson and wife, Tabitha, Brad Ferguson and wife, Jessica, Cody Reynolds, Paige Ruark and husband, Laramie, nine great grandchildren, Betty's children, Bryan (Theresa) VanWinkle of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Leslie (Jerry) Ferguson of Tulsa, Oklahoma,  Connie (John) Densmore of Las Vegas, Nevada, along with numerous extended relatives and close friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Leola Kimmons, his first wife, Dorothy Kimmons in 2005 and his second wife, Betty Jean VanWinkle Kimmons in 2016. 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at David W Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville from 1pm-7pm.  Family will greet friends on Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 6pm-7pm. 

Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at Holy Name Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.  Father James Shibi will officiate.  Graveside Committal will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa, Kansas.
