Royals Trade Nicky Lopez to Braves

The Kansas City Royals embraced the trade deadline, trading one of their longest tenured players to build for the future.

Infielder Nicky Lopez was dealt to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday in exchange for left-handed pitcher Taylor Hearn.

Lopez is only 28 years old, and an elite defender, playing second base, shortstop, and third base at an elite level. Lopez has also seen time at first base and in left field.

He was a 5th round pick in 2016 out of Creighton University. The Braves intend to use Lopez as a defensive substitute and pinch hitter late in games.

Hearn has spent a majority of the season in Triple-A, but has been effective with 54 strikeouts in 39 innings, and a 3.66 ERA. Hearn has a strong fastball and slider combination, and the Royals will look to turn him into a strong pitching option moving forward.
