Fredonia Girls, West Elk Boys Emerge Victorious

The Fredonia and West Elk varsities split their final matchup of 2021 on Friday, as the Yellowjacket girls emerged victorious 39-37 while the Patriot boys took their contest 51-33.

The boys' game was dominated by the inside game, a style that seemed to suit West Elk perfectly. The Patriots did not record a three-pointer all game, but controlled the boards and shot a solid 15-19 from the free-throw line. In the second half, the Patriots also showed an effective full-court press, with team leaders Garrett Toon and Young wreaking havoc and drawing easy points. The lead grew to as large as 22 but eventually settled at 18 points for the 51-33 victory.

Young led all scorers with 19 and was the only scorer in double-digits. Fredonia's Jeremiah Couch led the Yellowjackets with 9.

The girls' game was a bit more dramatic. Although West Elk led at the half, 24-21, Fredonia hit its stride in the second half to take a 7-point lead at 35-28. The Patriots then slowly turned things back in its favor over the next few minutes, going on a 9-2 run to tie things back up at 37. However, the Yellowjackets would get the last laugh, as Zoey Sims put a shot off of the glass with 8.7 seconds remaining to give Fredonia the narrow victory.

Sims led all scorers with 19, while West Elk's Josie Ware led the Patriots with 11.

That'll be it for 2021, but make sure to stay tuned to both 690AM and kggfradio.com for further updates on the next Game of the Week.
