Coffeyville Women Win, Men Fall to Cowley

Two styles of basketball were on display Wednesday, as the Coffeyville women defeated Cowley County 48-46 while the men lost 96-91.

The women's contest saw both teams struggle to get anything going offensively. Coffeyville struggled to get the inside shots they have become accustomed to, while the Cowley women struggled to take notice of the shot clock, racking up four violations in the first half alone. With the halftime score holding an 8-point lead for Cowley at 20-12, Coffeyville would need to dig deep in the second half. After another uneventful third quarter, the Red Ravens would turn on the after burners in the final 10 minutes. Trailing by 10 at the beginning, Coffeyville would nearly double their point total and take their first lead of the game with just minutes to spare. Cowley would get three seperate opportunites to tie the game up, but solid defense each time forced the Tigers to take bad shots, and Coffeyville finally earned their 20th victory this season in its third attempt. Faith Simpson led all scorers, picking up a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Ania Markowska also picked up another double-double for herself, adding 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The men's game was vastly different, with the same Cowley squad that had beaten Coffeyville by 16 earlier in the year looking to increase the tempo at every opportunity. However, unlike the first contest, Coffeyville would keep up, actually heading into the locker rooms with a three point lead. Cowley would catch fire in the second half, unfortunately, sinking a barrage of three-pointers that have helped them become the sixth-ranked team in the latest NJCAA Division I polls. Coffeyville would stick around, often times getting back to within 9 or 7 points, but the Tigers proved to be too hot to handle once again as Coffeyville fell by 5.

The women improve to 20-5 on the season and 10-5 in Jayhawk Conference play, while the men fall to 17-8 and 9-6 in the conference. The Red Ravens will take a long road trip this Saturday, heading to Concordia for a matchup with Cloud County. The women's game will tip off at 2 p.m, with the games being broadcast, as always, on US 98.1, KUSN.
