Red Raven Basketball Is Back Tonight!

After the Lady Red Ravens open up the 2018 basketball season last night at home, it’s now time for the men's team to get their start. Tonight marks the first regular season games and the beginning of the Community State Bank Classic from Nellis Hall. The Red Ravens are on the court tonight against Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds, looking to walk away from the weekend unbeaten. The Red Ravens, who received a 4 seed in the national pre-season rankings, are faced with a few tough road challenges this year as coach Herkelman wants to win as many home games as they can this season. Hall of Fame Head Coach Jay Herkelman back on the sidelines for yet another promising looking season. He says he expects this team to finish with a better record than last year as the Red Ravens finished 29 and 5, won the Region 6 tournament and will return many players from that roster into this year. Coach Herkelman did mention the offense will take a hit without All-American T.J. Washington but expects the young guys to step up. One of the few returning players is Keon Queen. The Red Ravens haven’t had much size, and Queen stepped up in many games last year as that big man. Queen struggles to stay out of foul trouble and gets very emotional during games, coach Herkelman doesn't want to lose that emotion, but is trying to channel that into better play on the court rather than worse. That was a big point of emphasis in the off season as well as recruiting guys with size for the low block. Tonight we will see how the offseason moves pay off as they play a doubleheader here in Coffeyville on their home court. First game will tip off at 5 PM and the next game will start around 7 shortly after the first game concludes. We will cover that game for you on your home for Red Raven Basketball, 98.1 KUSN FM.
