Residents Protest County Road Closure at Commission Meeting

Residents from northeastern Montgomery County ask commissioners to reopen a county road.

A large number of residents from County Road 6200 near the junction of US-400 and US-169 attended today's Montgomery County commission meeting to protest the recent closure of part of that road due to safety concerns about a low water bridge. The bridge and the road were closed last week after Public works Director Jim Wright reported to the commission that an engineering report of the bridge found it structurally unsafe. At last week's meeting Commissioner Robert Bever said he thought a traffic study was in order to determine the amount of traffic that would be affected. However, due to the engineer's report and the liability face by the county, the decision was made to close the bridge indefinitely.

Many area residents spoke at today's meeting. Many of them voiced concerns that the detour would cause added to time for emergency vehicles in addition to the increased driving time for residents. Most want the bridge repaired bu the county thinks those repairs would be too expensive. One resident said that the cost may be high, but as taxpayers, they wanted the bridge repaired.

Commissioner said they would revisit the issue and see if some accommodation could be made.
