Parsons Police Add New Technology to Crime Fighting Efforts

The Parsons Police Department is completeing the beta testing phase for their new license plate recognition software.

In Februay 2023 the Parsons City Commission heard a presentation about the Falcon Automatic License Plate Recognition or ALPR camera from Flock Safety. P-P-D has been beta testing five of the ALPR cameras in an effort to help reduce and solvve crime.

The ALPR cameras send real-time alerts to law enforcement when a stolen vehicle or a known suspect from a criminal database is detected. They also send real-time alerts in missing person cases. The cameras do not use facial recognition technology. The new system will cost the P-P-D about $14,000 per year which will be paid for with funds from the department's drug seizure account.

Parsons joins other area communities in using the Flock ALPR system including Pittsburg, Adams County, Montgomery County, Bourbon County, Jasper County, Frontenac Police, Coffeyville, Caney, and Independence.

Communities using Flock Safety LPR's have reported crime reductions of up to 70%.
