Man Arrested for Death of Newborn Son

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office arrests a man for the death of his newborn son.

KBI agents and deputies arrested 24-year-old Jason P. Marnell, of Richmond, during a traffic stop on a warrant for first-degree murder and abuse of a child. On January 14th, at around 10:40am, Franklin County sheriff’s deputies responded to a medical call. Upon arrival, they found an unresponsive infant. Life-saving measures were attempted and the baby was transported to an Ottawa hospital. The infant was later identified as 1-month-old Waylon S. Marnell.

The child was later transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City in critical condition. The KBI was asked to assist in the investigation on January 17th. On January 28th, the baby was taken off life-support and died around 3:00pmpm. The investigation led agents and deputies to believe Marnell was responsible for the injuries that caused the baby’s death. Marnell was booked into the Franklin County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
