Census of Ag Numbers Released

 

The number of farms in Kansas has decreased while net income is on the rise. Those are some of the highlights from data just released from the 2022 census of agriculture.

 

According to data from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, the number of farms in Kansas decreased 5% from 2017 to just under 56,000. The average farm size in Kansas increased slightly to 804 acres, while the percentage of total land used for farming in the state decreased slightly. Land used for farms in Kansas accounts for around 85% of the state.

 

The total value of agricultural products increased in 2022, up 24 billion dollars from 2017. Average net income per farm increased nearly 50% at just over $73,000.

 

The average age of producers has increased slightly from 58.1 to 58.2 years. There were just under 10,000 young producers under the age of 34 farming in Kansas in 2022. Finally, the number of farms with internet access increased from 76% to 79%.
