Shipping Holiday Goodies and Treats

As Christmas draws nearer, many people may be thinking about sending homemade treats as gifts.

While receiving tasty treats in the mail is an excellent gift, no one wants to receive a box of crumbs, so it's important to consider the types of foods that are being sent. K-State Health, Food Safety, and Nutrition Agent Holly Miner says packing is an important consideration especially with perishable foods.

If the package needs to travel a long way, choose non-perishable foods that do not require refrigeration such as hard candy, pralines, dried fruits and meats, or dehydrated soup and beverage mixes. When packing baked goods, pack each type separately in resealable bags. Before sending, call or text the recipient so they know food is on the way.
