Halloween Safety Tips

As Halloween approaches, area law enforcement agencies are reminding parents of safety tips to help keep children safe.

Many communities and organizations host community safe walk or trunk or treat events, which can be used as an alternative to going to unknown homes. Children who do go door-to-door should go with a responsible adult and only to well-lit homes. Children should avoid entering homes without parental or guardian supervision. Pedestrians should stay on the sidewalks. Trick-or-treaters should wear reflective clothing or carry a light. Ensure costumes fit well and do not obstruct visibility or cause them to trip and fall. Ensure children know their address and parent's phone number, in case they get separated.

For drivers, eliminate distractions, focus on the road and trick-or-treaters. Slow down in residential neighborhoods and obey all traffic signs and signals. Look for children crossing the street. Turn on headlights, even in the daylight, to be more visible.
