Motorists Encouraged to Be Aware of Deer

It's deer breeding season and that means deer are increasingly on the move, from now until the end of the year.

Deer collisions can happen any time of year, but they are much more common in the fall. This means it's important for drivers to take caution especially when driving at dawn or dusk, when deer along roadways are more prevalent. The most important safety precaution drivers can take is to be alert and watch for deer along the roadway. Shawn Steward of Triple-A Kansas, says deer are a common cause of traffic accidents.

Steward also advises drivers to reduce speed near wooded areas and green spaces or streams and ponds, especially around deer crossing signs. not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as it may cause motorists to veer into oncoming traffic, run off the road, hit other objects, or overturn.
