Commerce Police Officer Sees House on Fire, Saves Homeowner

A Commerce, Oklahoma, Assistant Police Chief saves a homeowner from a house fire.

Patrol Assistant Chief Vernon Moyer was on patrol on early Tuesday morning when he noticed flames coming from a house. Moyer contacted dispatch to request fire rescue then proceeded to check on the house. He saw flames coming out of the home's windows when he heard a woman's voice calling for help. Moyer determined the voice was coming from the garage and attempted to open the garage door. He found that the door was stuck and there were no other windows or doors available as the woman inside continued to call for help. Moyer says he pulled on the door as hard as he could and it finally came open, freeing the woman.

Fire crews arrived to extinguish the fire and EMS treated the woman for smoke inhalation. She sustained no other injuries.

There was extensive damage to the house and investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
