Parsons School Board Discusses Student Behavior Issues

The Parsons Public Schools are seeing a decrease in student violence.

At Monday's Board of Education meetings, board members heard from Assistant Superintendent Jeff Pegues about behavioral issues in the school district. Pegues told the board that there has been an increase in behaviors such as profanity, horse play, disruptive behavior, and cell phone and dress code violations. But, Pegues says, catching these lower level infractions means stopping them before they escalate into something worse. The district is using restorative practices to deal with problems in positive ways. Pegues says a focus on student attendance has also had a big effect.

The school board also discussed a new open enrollment policy for out-of-district students as required by the state due to a new state statute and accepted resignations from bus driver Roger Daniels and weights coach Jeff Schibi.
