The city of Independence is ready to begin construction on a new sports complex.

 Ground breaking ceremonies were held on Friday for the new Central Park Sports Complex on Park Boulevard in Indy. Mayor Louis Ysusi was on hand with other state and local officials to officially begin the new project. Ysusi says the purpose of the new sports complex is to continue the city tradition of providing excellent outdoor activities for the kids of Independence.

The project was made possible through donations from local citizens and organizations including the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Phase one of construction is slated to begin in the spring with Phase 2 to follow in the spring of 2025. Friday's ceremonies also included a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the Outdoor Fitness Center, located just southwest of the current ball parks.
