Embattled Police Chief in Marion, KS, Resigns

The police chief who led an August raid on a small Kansas newspaper resigns.

Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody resigned yesterday just days after being suspended from his duties. Marion Mayor Dave Mayfield suspended Cody last week for reasons that have not been made public.

Recently released body camera footage taken during the August 11 raid of the Marion County Record and the home of its publisher Eric Meyer show officers searching desks. Cody can be heard in the background of the videos. Cody obtained warrants for the raid by telling a judge that he had evidence of possible identity theft and other potential crimes tied to the circulation of information about a local restaurant owner's driving record. The local prosecutor, however, has said there was not sufficient evidence to justify either search. The raid has ignited a national debate over freedom of the press. Cody faces on federal lawsuit as a result of the raid and others are expected to follow.
