US Reps LaTurner of Kansas and Cole of Oklahoma Reintroduce Social Security Legislation

Kansas Congressman Jake LaTurner and Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole reintroduce Bipartisan Social Security Commission Legislation. According to the Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees 2022 Annual Report, Social Security’s combined trust funds will be exhausted in 2035, providing that no policy changes are made.

The Legislation reintroduced by LaTurner and Cole will be modeled after the 1983 Social Security Commission and would create a 13-member commission made from members of both the House and the Senate. 12 of the members would be appointed by leadership from both parties in the House and Senate, with 2 of the 12 being non-elected experts. The commission is chaired by the 13th appointee, which is named by the President. The President’s appointee would mean that the President’s party would have 7 members and the other party would have 6.)

According to the bill, the Commission would be required to report to Congress on the 75-year health of Social Security and provide recommendations as to how to improve the program. The legislation based on the commission’s plan would then receive expedited consideration in Congress for an up or down vote.
