Independence Man's Facebook Post Taken Seriously

An Independence man is ordered to receive mental health services during a 36-month supervision.

The court order stems from charges of threatening the life of the President of the United States as well as a secret service agent on a Facebook post.  Scott Ryan Merryman agreed to a deal in which the federal government will defer prosecution of the case for up to 36 months.

If Merryman is able to comply with the conditions of the agreement then the government can choose to reduce the order to 25 months. Once Merryman has completed the supervision the government can dismiss the charges against him.  Court records indicate that Merryman developed PTSD as a result of a battlefield incident in which he unintentionally shot and killed an innocent Afgan child during a firefight.
