Staff at the Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence are saddened to report that Bucky, the popular fallow deer, has passed away. He was injured late last week after being injured by one of the zoo’s bison with which he shared an enclosure. Bucky was sedated and humanely euthanized after Zoo Veterinarian, Dr. Kevin Cooper’s examination concluded the deer’s injuries were fatal.
The incident was an aberration, and the staff says there is no reason to suspect the bison are a threat to other animals, staff, or zoo visitors. Bucky was the only other animal to share the bison pen.
